Shift+Click Privacy Policy
Shift+Click is a browser extension made by Christophe Bouche ("I", "me"). It lets you save and copy images, SVGs, video files, video frames, colors, favicons and font information from the web page you are viewing, using keyboard-and-click shortcuts.
This policy explains what the extension accesses, what it does with it, and what it never does. The short version: Shift+Click does not collect, store or share any personal data. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is sent to me.
1. No account, no analytics, no developer server
- Shift+Click has no account and no sign-in.
- It contains no analytics, tracking, advertising or crash-reporting code.
- It does not communicate with any server operated by me. I do not receive any information about you, the pages you visit or the files you save.
2. What the extension accesses, and when
Shift+Click runs on the http and https pages you visit so that its shortcuts are available everywhere. It stays idle until you use one of its shortcuts. Then it accesses only what is needed for the action you asked for:
| Your action | What the extension reads | What it does with it |
|---|---|---|
| Shift+Click (download) | The element under your cursor (image, SVG, canvas, CSS background or video) and its address | Saves that file to your computer |
| Shift+Alt+Click (copy) | The same element | Copies the image to your clipboard |
| Color shortcut | The pixels of the clicked image, SVG, canvas or video frame | Computes its dominant color and copies the color code to your clipboard |
| Favicon shortcut | The page's favicon | Copies it to your clipboard |
| Font scan | The fonts used by the text on the page and, for web fonts, the font file | Shows you the font names, styles and where they are used |
| Save or copy a video frame | The frame currently displayed in the video you clicked | Turns that single frame into a PNG and saves or copies it |
To get a file's content (for example to copy an image, convert it to PNG or read a font's name), the extension downloads that one file directly from the website that serves it, exactly like your browser does when it displays the page. If that website requires you to be signed in to view the file, Chrome may send that website's own cookies with the request, as it does for the page itself. The extension never reads, stores or transmits cookies.
All of this processing happens locally in your browser. The result goes to your Downloads folder or your clipboard, and nowhere else.
3. What the extension stores
Shift+Click stores only your settings:
- your custom shortcuts and which shortcuts are turned on;
- your image and clipboard formats (original or PNG);
- your color format (HEX, RGB, HSL or OKLCH);
- your download folder structure and the "Ask where to save" option.
These settings are saved with Chrome's storage (chrome.storage.sync). If you have turned on Chrome sync, Google syncs them between your own devices under your Google account, according to Google's privacy policy. They stay in your Chrome profile and I have no access to them.
Shift+Click does not keep a history of what you save or copy. To avoid starting too many downloads at once, it checks how many downloads are in progress. It reads only that count and does not look at your download history.
4. What the extension never does
Since version 1.4.0, Shift+Click:
- does not read cookies or ask for the "cookies" permission;
- does not observe or intercept network traffic, and does not ask for the "webRequest" permission;
- does not record, capture or download streamed videos (for example videos delivered through Media Source, HLS or DASH). For those videos, you can only save the preview image or a single still image of the current frame;
- never downloads video files on YouTube;
- does not use any website's private or internal API, and does not load or analyze other pages in the background;
- does not read the content of your clipboard (it only writes to it when you copy something);
- does not run any code downloaded from the internet. All of its code is included in the extension package.
5. Sharing and selling
I do not sell, rent, share or transfer any user data, because I do not collect any. Shift+Click does not use or transfer data for advertising, for credit or lending decisions, or for any purpose unrelated to its single purpose described above.
6. Third parties
- The websites you visit. When you save or copy something, the file comes directly from the website that hosts it. That website may log the request as it does for any page visit. Its own privacy policy applies.
- Google Chrome. Your settings are stored and, if you use Chrome sync, synced by Google as described in section 3.
- Links in the extension. The settings popup has links to my website, a donation page (Ko-fi) and my email address. Nothing is sent to these services unless you click a link, and then their own privacy policies apply.
7. Permissions and why they are needed
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Access to http and https sites | So the shortcuts work on any page you view, and so the extension can fetch the one file you clicked from the site that serves it (often an image server on another domain). |
| Downloads | To save the file you clicked to your Downloads folder, using the folder structure you chose. |
| Storage | To remember your settings. |
| Scripting | To load the extension's own built-in script in tabs that were already open when you installed or updated it, to show an error message in the page if needed, and to save images that only exist inside the page. No remote code is ever run. |
8. Your rights and choices
Because Shift+Click does not collect personal data, I hold no data about you to access, correct, export or delete. You can turn off any shortcut in the settings, or uninstall the extension at any time from chrome://extensions.
If you email me, I will use your email address and message only to reply to you, and I will delete them on request.
9. Children
Shift+Click is a general-purpose tool. It does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.
10. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
11. Changes to this policy
If a future version changes how data is handled (for example if a paid option with a payment provider is added), I will update this page before releasing that version and change the date at the top. Material changes will also be mentioned in the extension's listing.
